Weekly Photo Challenge – Monument

20131006-_DSC5701-EditThe Lewelling House was part of the Underground Railroad back in the 1800’s.  My grandfather purchased the home from the last family who resided there.  He knew the value of preserving this historical home and was instrumental in creating the Lewelling House – Quaker Museum.

Henderson Lewelling who owned the property during time of the Underground Railroad was the first to plant fruit trees in Iowa.  After residing in Iowa for 10 years he moved to Oregon with 800 fruit trees.  He is known as the Father of the Pacific Fruit Industry.
