Until Next Year

The past couple of months the wildflowers in my yard have been in full bloom.  Unfortunately, it is now  time to say goodbye until next year.

The once vibrant color in my front yard is now brown.  The wildflowers have gone to seed, but not yet released them.  Once they do, the Gambel Quail and Doves will be feasting.  We have seen a couple of pair of Gambel Quail walking along the top of our block wall in the back yard.  One pair looked as if they were looking to make a nest which would have been fun to watch.  However, they must have discovered it was Molly’s turf and found somewhere else to nest.

But before I could completely say goodbye, I made a few more images yesterday of some poppies still blooming.  It was an overcast and extremely windy afternoon, perfect for some artistic images.

One last note, it will take about 10 hours to clean up the front yard, but so worth all of the labor!

Sweet Smelling Lemons

Not only is my front yard covered in wildflowers, but there are flowers and/or blooms in the back yard too.

Last year we planted a Meyer lemon tree.  These lemons are not as bitter as regular lemons.  Also they look like a cross between a tangerine and a lemon.  The  rind is more smooth and an orange-yellow color.  They smell so sweet and refreshing!  We had put off planting a lemon tree at this house because in our past homes, every time we planted a lemon tree we sold the house.  Who knows how long we will be in this house and if we’ll ever enjoy the fruit of this tree.

The blooms are quite fragrant, and are just so sweet smelling! I love how they look purple when first starting to bud and then a brilliant white when open.  That little black dot is actually an ant.  I was hoping the bees in the front yard had found their way to the back yard, but not today anyway.

The back of the petals are striped with some of the  purple color still showing.  As the tree is so young, only time will tell if it will produce any fruit this year.

And we planted this tree because we received a few in our weekly farm share from Chow Locally last year and I made a Meyer Lemon Pudding Cake that was so good I could have eaten the whole thing in one sitting!

Here is my photo of the delicious dessert.
